Yamaha R2 Pre-Bookings Finally Open in India Ahead of August 27 Launch

Yamaha has opened pre-bookings for its much-awaited R2 fully faired motorcycle in India, bringing the new sports bike one step closer to its official debut. Bookings are currently open for a refundable amount of Rs 10,000 through Yamaha’s website, while the motorcycle itself is scheduled to launch on August 27, 2026.

The R2 is expected to slot between the R15 and R3 in Yamaha’s sports bike line-up and is likely to appeal to riders looking for a more powerful alternative to the R15 without stepping into the considerably larger-engine segment.

Yamaha R2 pre-booking details

Customers can reserve the upcoming R2 by paying Rs 10,000. Yamaha says the amount will be adjusted against the final on-road price when the motorcycle is purchased. Buyers who change their minds can cancel the booking, with the refund process available from September 5.

Yamaha is also expected to give priority delivery to customers who pre-book the motorcycle ahead of its launch, although deliveries will remain subject to availability at individual dealerships.

Yamaha R2 engine and performance

While Yamaha has not officially revealed the technical specifications yet, the R2 is expected to use a larger single-cylinder engine based on the same basic philosophy as the R15. Current reports point towards an engine in the 200-220cc range.

The focus appears to be on delivering a noticeable step up in performance while keeping the motorcycle relatively light and agile. The R2 is expected to challenge motorcycles such as the KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR, both of which sit around the 25hp mark.

That lightweight approach could become one of the R2’s biggest strengths. The current R15 V4 weighs around 141kg, while the KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR are heavier at around 160kg and 163.5kg, respectively. Yamaha could use a similar weight-conscious approach for the R2 to give it a sharper riding experience.

R2 will not replace the R15

Despite sitting above it in the range, the Yamaha R2 is not expected to replace the R15 entirely. Instead, Yamaha is likely to streamline the existing R15 line-up, with the top-spec R15 M expected to make way for the new motorcycle. The older R15 S could also be phased out.

This would give Yamaha a clearer spread in its Indian portfolio, with the R15 continuing to serve as the entry point to the brand’s R-series while the R2 offers a more performance-focused option.

Yamaha R2 expected price

Yamaha has not announced the R2’s price yet. Current expectations suggest that it could be priced around the Rs 2 lakh mark, putting it in direct competition with the KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR.

The final price will be one of the biggest factors in determining where the R2 sits in the market. Yamaha already has a strong following among enthusiasts, but the R2 will have to offer enough extra performance and equipment to justify the jump over the R15.

Launch is just around the corner

The Yamaha R2 will be officially launched in India on August 27, 2026. The motorcycle is expected to be manufactured in India and will also be exported to international markets, making the R2 an important addition to Yamaha’s India operations.

With pre-bookings now underway, attention will soon shift to the motorcycle’s final specifications, official pricing and first ride impressions. More importantly, Yamaha’s pricing strategy could determine just how aggressively the R2 competes with the KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR.
