Yamaha R2 has officially arrived in India, bringing a new 200cc option to the brand’s R-series. Priced from ₹2.30 lakh (ex-showroom), the fully faired motorcycle is aimed at riders looking for more performance without stepping into the larger-capacity motorcycle segment.
The company has launched the new Yamaha R2 in India with prices starting at ₹2.30 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The motorcycle will be available in three versions, with the range going up to ₹2.53 lakh for the top-spec R2 M.
What makes the Yamaha R2 particularly interesting is where Yamaha has positioned it. It is not meant to replace the R15, which continues to be sold in India. Instead, the new motorcycle gives Yamaha customers a more powerful option while keeping the compact, fully-faired character that has made the R-series popular.
A new engine of Yamaha R2, but the focus is on keeping things light
At the heart of the R2 is a new 204cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine. It produces 26.5hp at 10,000rpm and 19.1Nm at 8,000rpm, with the motor using a DOHC four-valve setup.
Yamaha has taken a slightly different route with the chassis as well. Instead of using the R15’s Deltabox frame, the Yamaha R2 gets a new diamond-type steel frame. The frame itself weighs 14kg, helping Yamaha keep the motorcycle’s overall weight down.
The base R2 tips the scales at just 149kg, while the higher variants weigh 150kg. That makes the motorcycle particularly light for its class. The seat height is 810mm, which is also slightly lower than the R15’s.
For a motorcycle in this segment, that weight figure could be just as important as the power output. Rather than simply making the Yamaha R2 bigger, Yamaha appears to have concentrated on keeping it manageable and responsive.
Yamaha has packed plenty of electronics into the R2
The Yamaha R2 isn’t a stripped-down sports bike.
A ride-by-wire throttle allows Yamaha to offer three riding modes — Street, Sport and Rain. The motorcycle also gets traction control, an assist-and-slipper clutch and dual-channel ABS as standard.
The rider gets a 5-inch colour TFT instrument display, while Yamaha’s connectivity and navigation functions add some everyday usability to the otherwise track-inspired motorcycle.
There is also a feature that could make the middle variant particularly tempting.
The second R2 variant gets a bi-directional quickshifter, allowing clutchless upshifts and downshifts. Yamaha is positioning this as a segment-first feature for the motorcycle.
Three variants, three different approaches
Yamaha has kept the R2 range relatively straightforward.
The Yamaha R2 is the entry point at ₹2.30 lakh and comes with the core mechanical and electronic package.
Step up to the R2 with Quickshifter, priced at ₹2.39 lakh, and you get the bi-directional quickshifter along with body-coloured alloy wheels.
At the top is the R2 M, priced at ₹2.53 lakh. This version adds preload-adjustable front and rear suspension, adjustable brake and clutch levers, a faux-suede seat and a keyless system.
The difference between the base and top versions is ₹23,000, so buyers aren’t being asked to make a huge jump if they want the additional equipment.

Familiar R-series styling with a sharper edge
Visually, Yamaha hasn’t moved away from the R-series formula.
The R2 gets a compact, fully-faired design with the aggressive proportions expected from an R-series motorcycle. Its front-end styling takes cues from Yamaha’s larger supersport models, while the rear remains compact and sporty.
There are five colour options spread across the three variants. The base motorcycle is offered in Metallic Black and Dark Bluish Grey, while the quickshifter-equipped version gets Racing Blue and Matte White Pearl. The Yamaha R2 M is available in Metallic Grey.
The motorcycle also gets a MotoGP-inspired aluminium rear swingarm, USD front forks and a sporty riding position.
Price and availability
Yamaha has priced the R2 as follows:
- YZF-R2: ₹2.30 lakh
- YZF-R2 Quickshifter: ₹2.39 lakh
- YZF-R2 M: ₹2.53 lakh
All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi.
Bookings are already open, while deliveries are scheduled to begin from mid-September 2026. The Yamaha R2will be sold through Yamaha’s Blue Square dealership network, rather than through the company’s standard outlets.
Where the R2 fits in Yamaha’s line-up
The R2 doesn’t make the R15 redundant. In fact, Yamaha is keeping both motorcycles on sale.
That gives the company a fairly clear spread in its sports-bike range. The R15 continues to cater to riders looking for a smaller-capacity entry into the R-series, while the R2 gives those wanting a noticeable performance upgrade another option without moving into a much larger motorcycle.
With 26.5hp, a 149kg starting weight and a starting price of ₹2.30 lakh, the R2 enters a segment where KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR are already established names.
The interesting part will be seeing how buyers respond to Yamaha’s approach. The R2 isn’t trying to win the segment simply by offering the biggest engine. Instead, Yamaha has focused on a lightweight package, electronic aids and the familiar R-series identity.
Now, with deliveries only a few weeks away, the real test begins on Indian roads.
